We’re all going on TWO summer holidays!

Juny 22 2015 Publicat per Samantha Marsh

Families can take two summer holidays for less than a grand with Pitchup.com

Budget-conscious parents can book not one but two holidays this summer for under £1,000 with Pitchup.com.

For less money than most families would fork out for a hotel stay this summer, a family of four can treat themselves to one seven-day UK break PLUS one overseas holiday by booking a camping, glamping or caravan site.

It means parents can book one trip at the beginning of the school summer holidays and another at the end – ensuring kids have two treats in store – or do a ‘twin-centre’ style back-to-back holiday.

Here’s how to take the family away twice this summer for less than a grand…

Option one: Norfolk then northern France

King’s Lynn Caravan and Camping Park has manicured, spacious pitches nuzzled into 10 acres of emerald parkland, with swanky, eco-friendly amenities, a small shop plus supermarket and family-friendly eateries a five-minute drive away.

A mega pod is ideal for families of four as it offers some home comforts, with a double bed and sofa bed, small fridge, microwave and kettle, plus picnic bench and barbecue area. Just pack your own bedding and cooking equipment.

Price: Seven nights in a pod starts from £385 for two adults and two kids in late July/early August.

Camping Les Pieds dans l'Eau in Brittany has direct access to the beach where kids can go windsurfing or kayaking, while facilities on site include ping pong, a volleyball court and mini golf. Bread and pastries can be pre-ordered in the evening ready for the next morning. Hiking trails and fishing are close, while summer stays may well coincide with one of the many festivals held at nearby Crozon. A big local produce market called la Foire takes place every first Wednesday of the month. A two-bedroom tent lodge has a double air bed and two single camp beds, with fridge, cooker and power. Guests will need to bring their own bed linen and towels.

Price: From £176 for seven nights for a family of four in August. Grass pitches start from £138.

Option two: Isle of Wight then Belgium

Roebeck Camping and Caravan Park is an independent, family-run park in 14 acres of pasture and woodland. There is a well-stocked coarse fishing lake on site and guests can take in panoramic views over the Ashey Valley and downs to the south. The site is also just a few minutes from the famous Appley Beach at Ryde, with its impressive gothic tower. Other safe, sandy beaches are within easy reach.

Price: Seven nights glamping in an authentic Sioux-style tipi with electric hook-up starts from £460 for up to five people in late July/early August. Bedding costs £30 extra. Or two adults and two children can pitch up a tent on a non-electric pitch from £182.

A two-hour drive from Bruges is the friendly Camping Le Rocher de la Vierge at the foot of a river, surrounded by forests and rocks, near Liège. Perfect for hiking, cycling, kayaking and fishing, the campsite also has facilities for volleyball, football, home ball, pétanque and table tennis, a kids’ playground, mini animal park, fast-food kiosk and cafeteria. During July and August activities for children, teenagers and adults are organised and various tournaments are held. Within a 10-minute drive is a toy and children's museum in Ferrière and a watermill and bakery museum in Harzée. Two-bedroom holiday homes are ideal for families, with one double bedroom and one twin, a fully-equipped kitchen corner, living room with TV, dining room, washroom and toilet.

Price: From £299 for seven nights for a family of four in August. Pitches also available.

Option three: North Yorkshire then northern Spain

Yapham Holds Farmhouse Campsite is in the rural North Yorkshire countryside on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, yet close to York – with tons to do for families – and the nearby market town of Pocklington. The attention to detail rivals any hotel service – little touches include flowers and wine on request, flowers and handwash in the spotless loo and shower block, and knowledgeable hosts who can advise on family-friendly days out. Back-to-basics camping is provided in tipis, which don’t have electricity, but do have coir matting and a picnic bench outside (bring camping gear and bedding). Or bring your own tent and pitch up!

Price: Seven nights in a tipi start from £330 for a family of four at the end of July/early August. Pitches start from £133 per week.

Close to the ports of Santander and Bilbao, Camping Playa Arenillas is right by the sea, only 100 metres from a sandy beach which is perfect for surfing. Leisure facilities include a playground, football court and ping pong tables, a snack bar/restaurant with a large terrace offering an extensive menu with Spanish and international options. There is also a small shop selling essentials from fresh bread to newspapers. Internet is available on site free of charge. There’s plenty to do in the area, including 4x4 guided tours, boat trips, hiking and cycling trails.

A pre-erected tent has two sleeping areas with one double bed and one room with a bunk and a single. A mini kitchen is outside and toilet/shower facilities close by. Bring your own bed linen and towels.

Price: Seven nights in August for two adults and two children start from £327.

Pitchup.com founder Dan Yates says: “Kids love camping. It offers freedom to run free, explore the great outdoors, get lots of fresh air and get close to nature. It’s fun to eat round the campfire and do lots of activities such as fishing, hiking and swimming – all for a fraction of the cost of a hotel-based vacation.

“With ready prepared accommodation and all the mod cons, many campsites now offer a real alternative to a hotel. Given the choice, I’d bet most kids would want to sleep in a tipi or bell tent rather than a hotel room any day.”
