We’ve found great advantages to hiking the Malvern Hills on Worcestershire’s southern edge of Worcestershire. First and most obviously up, they’re so utterly gorge they’ve been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Second up, hiking here will have you in cultured company: Edward Elgar, WH Auden and JRR Tolkien all wandered among these hills. And third up, Worcestershire as a county was probably the inspiration for The Shire in Lord of the Rings, so Middle Earth enthusiasts could if they so wished pretend to be hobbits as they hike. Not that we’ve ever done that, oh no. Or wanted to go camping in Worcestershire specifically to pitch up on the Malvern Hills and pretend we’re on a quest…

More dreamy hiking can be had from Worcestershire campsites by walking the Worcestershire section of the Severn Way which passes the county capital Worcester, or on the 31 miles of the Worcestershire Way from Malvern to beaut Bewdley, HQ of the scenic Severn Valley Railway from Kidderminster to Shropshire’s Bridgnorth. Bewdley’s also the stopping point for the roaringly good West Midland Safari and Leisure Park, and for wanders around Wyre Forest, so ancient that we (could, possibly) pretend to be on a quest here too.
