Cumbria is home to the Lake District, the most visited national park in the UK. And it’s got Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain and from whence you can see across to the Mourne Mountains and Snowdonia. And it’s got lakes. Lots of lakes. The Lake District has the deepest and longest lakes in England (Wastwater and Windermere), but Lake Ullswater is also a favourite destination, as it’s where Wordsworth wandered lonely as a cloud and saw all those daffodils.

Boating is what you do in the Lake District, with paddling, rowing, yachting and steamboating all available, and there are depths to dive too, with scuba diving clubs to help you take the plunge. But, as it’s the dampest part of England, Lake District locals over the years have set up oodles of indoor options too – family days out, National Trust houses and museums can all be had here, and we think the Pencil Museum at Keswick is a must.

Holiday parks and campsites in Cumbria and the Lake District come in as many flavours as the boating: from youth hostels to yurts, you’ll find something to dive into whatever your budget.
