Even those of us not fortunate enough to grow up Swallows and Amazoning in Cumbria (sniff) will have heard of Kendal at an early age. Yes, because of the mint cake. (Nom.) It’s really rather lovely in its own right, but we particularly favour it as it’s a favoured provision of mountaineers because of its high energy content: it was packed by Edmund Hillary and team on their ascent up Everest in 1953. A sort of Lake District elvish lembas, then, and so Kendal camping should include packing as much mint cake as possible in one’s pockets before taking off around the fells. Ascend the highest indoor climbing wall in the country at Kendal’s Lakeland Climbing Centre too: mint cake will be needed here as well.

Kendal’s annual mountain festival is one of the biggest in Europe and held every November, but a Kendal campsite is a jolly good base for those who prefer to keep feet planted firmly on the ground: the Lake District is just to the north and the Auld Grey Town has three museums, including the Museum of Lakeland Life with Arthur Ransome collection, and the Kendal Museum with the drawings of Alfred Wainwright, whose inked fell maps are as much of a Kendal souvenir as the mint cake.
