It’s mighty Plain – if you’re off camping in Wiltshire, you must make time for the mighty Stonehenge and Avebury stone circles on Salisbury Plain. The stone circle of Avebury is the biggest in Europe, and the solar temple/healing place/calendar/ancient nightclub of Stonehenge is the most famed Neolithic site in the country – even if no-one can quite work out why it’s there…

Wiltshire as a whole is pretty rocking for historical attractions – after Stonehenge, take a stroll around its city Salisbury eight miles away for a tower tour of its thirteenth century cathedral and a bit of time at the world's oldest working clock and the world’s best surviving copy of the Magna Carta, or take a wander along the Kennet & Avon Canal which proved jolly useful during the Industrial Revolution.

But if you’re at a Wiltshire campsite with horrible historians, ie the kids, hurry them along to Longleat to have a historic day out: the safari park here was the first of its kind in the world and the menagerie of animals here to see should stick in their memory for years.

Elizabethan Longleat House and its Capability Brown gardens are pretty wizard too; be sure and keep an eye out for historical ghosts.
