William Wordsworth was fond of Barmouth. (Yes. he did leave the daffodils of the Lake District occasionally.) As he poetically pointed out, the Snowdonia seaside resort is in a perfect position betwixt mountains and sea with a ‘glorious’ estuary running alongside – and he didn’t even mention the beach, a long stretch of sand and surf waves that will usually be found on any ‘best beaches in Wales’ list. He didn’t mention Barmouth camping either, but luckily Pitchup.com is here to pick up the pieces.
The glorious estuary Wills mentioned is the Mawddach, with Barmouth’s also-glorious harbour at one end – we bet Wordsworth wished he had a camera – and has walks and cycling paths from Barmouth to Dolgellau via Morfa Mawddach, Penmaenpool and lots of birdwatching on the nine-mile Mawddach Trail. In town, try the new Barmouth Heritage Trail, a circular route from the tourist information centre at the railway station stopping at 23 places of interest (30-ish if you add ice-cream, snacks and possibly a pub lunch). More walks are findable on the Barmouth campsite listings below, along with other local attractions and sights – the 870 miles of the Wales Coast Path pass along Barmouth too.
