Poles up who likes skiing? If you lean towards this type of hol, slide along to the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur for over seven hundred kilometres of slippery French Alps slopes scattered over 11 top-rated resorts – we think that makes for a reasonably good run.
In summer, soar above the mountains via hang glider or paraglider, plunge down them on 350kms of mountain bike trails or make tracks on over 6000km of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence hiking paths. Europe’s biggest canyon, the mighty and gorge-ous Gorges du Verdon, one of the Grand Sites of France, is in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence too; if you can spare the euros, floating over it in a hot air balloon is one of the best holiday experiences you’ll have anywhere. (Oui, vraiment, and if you’re camping in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, be sure and take the camera around the Verdon Regional Natural Park too.)
Although it’s a highly popular area with tourists, campsites in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence aren’t steeply priced (oui, vraiment), so put many saved cents towards your piste fees or hot air balloon ride, and check each campsite listing for more details on what to see and do.
