Let there be food – and let there be wine… If you’re camping in Rhône, leave rather a lot of room in the rucksack/car boot for tasty souvenirs: France’s gastronomy capital Lyon is in Rhône, along with the lip-smackingly tempting Beaujolais wine region and a goodly selection of Côtes du Rhône vineyards. Pass the corkscrew.
One of the three departments of the Rhône-Alpes, Rhône has most of its French folk living in the Lyon area, leaving lots of space for holidaymakers to roam around the rest of Rhône (after a day in Lyon city first). We’d suggest a hike, mountain bike or horse ride around the Rhône part of the Pilat Regional Natural Park if you’re feeling active, a meander along the banks of the Rhône and the Saône if you’re not, and in either case photo opportunities around the medieval village of Oingt, which is part of Pays des Pierres Dorées/Golden Stone Country and the only Rhône dwelling listed in Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (the prettiest villages in all the land).
Or book a Rhône campsite around the vineyards of the Beaujolais wine route to get the best from your hol – by which we mean ‘many bottled souvenirs’.
