If you clamber way up high up Mount Benacantil from the old Mediterranean city port Alicante, capital of the province of the same name in Comunidad Valenciana, you’ll gaspingly get to one of its main high-lights, the ninth-century Castle of Santa Bárbara, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain. It’s but one of many heritage sites in the province for history enthusiasts: settle down at the Castle of Santa Bárbara and use its wifi to research which to see next.
As we can hear kids laughing at the very idea, we’ll also stress the Alicante beaches, like award-winning Playa del Postiguet in the middle of the city and several others a quick bus ride away including 7kms of white sands at Playa de San Juan, site of a sandy 18-hole golf course. Water fans could also climb aboard a catamaran from Alicante’s ancient port to Tabarca island, once the haunt of Alicante’s pirates.
