This compact little area has quite a bit to see and do, with many more attractions, activities and good restaurants within a short bus ride or drive.

Stop off at the city of St Davids first to see its twelfth century cathedral, a popular place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages (canny Pope Callixtus II decreed that two pilgrimages to St Davids = one pilgrimage to Rome, leading to the devout descending on it from all over. Clever).

Like all the best cathedrals, you won’t see St Davids until it’s practically in front of you once you walk through the gatehouse: have the camera at the ready. The ruins of the fourteenth century Bishops Palace are next door for more snaps and there’s a café for a pitstop.

Waterwise around the peninsula, you’ve picked the right place in Pembrokeshire to learn or show off in the surf: St Davids has a surf school and nearby Whitesands is the top pick for Pembrokeshire surfers.

The mile-long stretch at Whitesands is probably the most popular beach in the area for families too, especially in summer: take the bus here if you can as the car park fills up very early in prime season. Whitesands has a surf school too as well as good access for boat launches, surf and deckchair hire, but no dogs are allowed from May to September.

There are several fairly easy walks around, such as the circular walk from the visitor centre down to Carfai Bay and onto the Pembrokeshire Coast Path to Whitesands Bay or St Justinians. Whichever your landscape preference – limestone cliffs, sandstone bays or volcanic headlands – you’ll find a coastal walk around here, with a seaside town or village café, market or pub to refuel at along the way.

Nature spotters can take an offshore islands boat trip from St Davids Peninsula around Ramsey and Grassholm Islands to see porpoises, dolphins and occasionally whales in the water, and seabirds teeming all around.

Ramsey has cliffs up to 120 metres high and Grassholm is the third most important gannet breeding area in the country with 39,000 pairs of birds ducking about – we bet that’s a bit noisy in spring…

Speaking of noisy chicks, if you have the youngsters with you they’ll probably appreciate a day trip to one of Pembrokeshire’s leisure parks: award-winning Folly Farm, voted best family day out in Wales; Oakwood Theme Park at Narberth and paintball, karting and high ropes at adventure centre Heatherton in Tenby.
