Furry beer? Beer and fur? Or maybe it’s beery fur…Visitors to Helston might find their tang getting tongled when telling about two of the town’s top attractions – Spingo beer and the festival of the Furry.
Spingo, meaning strong beer in Old English, is brewed in Helston’s Blue Anchor where Helston’s tin miners once received their wages, and should, we hear, be treated with the utmost respect. Which means not downing several bottles of it before joining in with a famous Helston happening: the annual furry festival or Flora Dance, held every year since medieval times.
But it’d be furry rude to just mention the beer and furfest when discussing the delights of Helston: it’s part of the Lizard Peninsula, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with views so lush they’d make us cry if we hadn’t been banned from doing that in public again. Any Helston holiday park or campsite will have the views and beers of the town within easy stagger: for inspiration, check the ‘Local Attractions’ section of each listing, or look for ideas using the Pitchup.com filters.
