What a beach… surfing in Cornwall might have its capital in Newquay, but you’ll see surfers plunging foamily into the waves at Perranporth eight miles away too: Perran Beach is stunning and the waves swell high here at higher tide. (If you’re just learning the ropes, call into Perranporth’s tourist office to pick up discount vouchers for local surf schools.) Frequent kitesurfers can be spotted on the water here too, or you could stay on land/sand and explore/roll down the dunes of Penhale Sands, rising up from Perran Beach’s edge.
As it’s on Cornwall’s wild north coast, a Perranporth campsite lands you close to Padstow and Wadebridge to the north, and St Agnes and arty St Ives to the south: we firmly recommend donning boots and packing picnic to get to Newquay, St Agnes and Portreath on the spectacular South West Coast Path – and then on to Penzance, Porthtowan and Godrevy Point… Then back to the sands, as any camping in Perranporth must include a sup at The Watering Hole, the only pub in the UK right on the beach.
