Cheddar Petruth Paddocks: A good life (photo added by manager on 09/07/2014)

General

  • Spacious, relaxing and free-range camping with clean facilities
  • Stunning views overlooking the Mendip Hills and Somerset Levels
  • Fires encouraged: pits kindling and logs delivered at a small charge

Want to get away from it all, chill out and do some free-range camping? Check out Cheddar Petruth Paddocks.

Jules and the team have made it their mission to ensure all guests have a seriously laid-back time: you won’t find overly zealous wardens prowling about here, and open fires are positively encouraged – fire-drums, kindling, logs and lighters can be delivered to your door every evening for a small charge. (They simply ask you don't bring your own so they know what's being burnt). You’ll also get a specially put together guide to Cheddar on arrival with recommendations for great local food and drink and a couple of special deals just for staying at the site.

Take the Strawberry Line by foot or bike for 15 minutes from the Cheddar Petruth gate to arrive at Cheddar Gorge, or continue on and take the old railway line path to Yatton, where trains hauled strawberries from the slopes of Cheddar to the early morning markets in east London over half a century ago. The bottom gate of the site goes directly to the Somerset Levels and there are marked walking and nature trails all around from Cheddar Gorge.

The site has stunning views overlooking the Mendip Hills in one direction and towards the Somerset Levels in the other. There’s loads of open space for the kids to run about in, get to know other and make new friends. Towards the end of the day, Jules often recruits helpers and gives trailer rides as he delivers the logs.

Well-behaved animals of all shapes and sizes are welcome - as long as they come with well-behaved owners who pick up after them...

If you can't face putting up a tent, try one of the tipis or the cosy shepherd's hut, which both sleep up to eight people and come complete with massive firepit and luxury camp beds so you can spend the evening relaxing by the fire under the stars.

There are grass and hardstanding pitches too for tents, tourers and motorhomes to stay in all weathers: both the camping fields have lots of taps and there's a chemical disposal point for guests with tourers and motorhomes.

Facilities are basic but clean, and the piping hot high pressure showers, loos and washbasins are all cleaned twice a day. There's a washing-up bay and coloured bags are provided for you to separate your waste/recycling. If you can't do without your hairdryer, the site has 25 hook–up points and will be adding more over time.

Cheddar Petruth Paddocks welcomes families, singles, couples and well-behaved groups – go and say hello.

Please note

Campfires positively encouraged - Fire-drums, kindling, logs and lighters delivered to your door every evening for a small charge. Please don't bring your own so we know what's being burnt.

Autumn/winter bookings please note: Our showers and toilets are basic but clean. Some folk struggle with the fact they are also mobile. Our washing basins currently have cold water feed however piping hot water supplies our showers and covered washing up area. If any of the above is a problem for you we suggest you'll probably be happier elsewhere.

If you are part of a group, please specify the lead name in the 'special requests' in the booking form.

Directions

By all means punch in our postcode BS27 3XW into satnav but please stop following it and start following our directions below when you are a couple of miles away - that way you'll not end up on an unmade road or on our drive!

Our site is just off the A371 on the edge of Cheddar. From Wells direction you will pass Winchester Farm/go-kart track on your left, immediately followed by a nasty S-bend. Then take the very first left into Labourham Way and take an immediate left. Ahead, you'll see a large sign saying "Staying with us?". Head towards this and turn left through the gates onto a small track.

From the A38/Axbridge direction take the A371 through Cheddar village. Then pass the football club on the right. Then take the next right into Labourham Way. Take an immediate left. Ahead, you'll see a large sign saying "Staying with us?". Head towards this and turn left through the gates onto a small track.

At the end of the track, please park on the hardstanding area and pop into our reception to say hello. Should reception be unattended please call us on the mobile phone number provided in your booking confirmation email - we'll just be a few minutes away. Please don't just pitch wherever and toddle off to the pub as we need to know you're here.

Public transport: 10-minute walk to nearest bus stop.

Local attractions

As well as the leisure centre, Cheddar village (just a ten-minute walk from the campsite) has crazy golf, riding stables, three pubs, all of which are child-friendly, and a fab Indian restaurant.

Fishing and sailing are both available at Cheddar Reservoir, but as you’re near so many caves in this part of the world some caving and potholing might be just the ticket too; several companies are in and around Cheddar to show you the ropes.

A 15-minute drive takes you to Wookey Hole Caves, home of the famous witch and with a circus, fairy garden and regular events, is a less hair-raising way to see Somerset caves (and is the home of cave-aged Cheddar cheese).

Cheddar Gorge is just five minutes from the village and has crazy golf, a cheese factory and six more pubs, all of which welcome children and dogs. For foodie delights, especially for veggies, make a stop at the tasty vegetarian café on your stroll towards the Gorge drop - we highly recommend sampling the homemade cakes on offer too...

If, like us, your favouritest things after cheese are chocolate and beer, the Cheddar Chocolate Company and the Cheddar Ales brewery are both very tasty; if it's cider you're after then Wilkins Cider Press can pull you a pint (or two); while Cheddar Sweet Kitchen, also in the village, holds free demonstrations of sweet-making to the drooling public.

For shopping, which should be done anywhere in the country you end up at, the famous Cheddar car boot sale is at Winchester Farm every Sunday all year round. More? Head for Clarks Village in nearby Street to get your mitts on discounted designer labels and brands.

Exmoor National Park is well worth a pony around too; go at night for some stargazing as it’s the first designated Dark Sky Reserve in Europe with several good places to see the best of the skies.

Elsewhere in Exmoor there’s horse riding, climbing, canoeing and fishing; info on all these and Exmoor events can be found at the park’s visitor centres based at Dulverton, Dunster and Lynmouth. Dry slope skiing, clay pigeon shooting, climbing and off-road driving can also be done nearby.

Day trippers will be chuffed to know that Cheddar is less than an hour away from Bath, Bristol and the seaside at Weston-super-Mare, with Glastonbury and the tiny city of Wells also easily accessible.
