Water, water everywhere: sailors, swimmers and watersporters can really push the boat out when camping in Gironde. Placed where the Dordogne and Garonne rivers meet the Atlantic, Gironde has over 125km of coastline, beaches and sand dunes to surf off, stroll around and bask on – and the highest sand dune in Europe, the Dune du Pyla. (Yes, it’s a bit of a scramble up, but think of the dizzying roll back down.) Inland, buoys and girls have the option of trips along 3500km of rivers, or kayaking/swimming/windsurfing in Gironde’s three large lakes – Hourtin-Carcans, Lacanau and Cazaux.
And yet…il est more! Gironde also has the Bordeaux wine regions, which make up the biggest controlled wine growing area in France: take a Bordeaux wine tour or learn the basics in wine tasting workshops before stacking up the car boot. There are also bastides to see, abbeys and cathedrals, summer festivals, native lamprey and shrimp to sample: all in all, Gironde is rather first-rate…
