We love Hampshire, we do. Not that we’re obsessed with Jane Austen or anything (cough, Derbyshire) but, well, it was the home of she who penned Pride and Prejudice. The biggest county in the south-east has lashings of other literary connections: Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth, John Keats lived in Winchester and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is buried in Minstead churchyard in the New Forest. And, not at all literary but heaps of fun, Peppa Pig World and three Go Ape! centres are in Hampshire too.
Did we mention boats? Boats are among our other very favourite things (sometimes we combine our two loves by reading in a boat on a sunny day, which is so blissful it almost makes us cry). Book a Hampshire holiday park, caravan park or glamping site to be near all sorts of nautical niceties – the old ports of Southampton and Portsmouth, oodles of seaside resorts and towns, and even a ferry to shuttle across to the Isle of Wight.
To venture in from the coast, almost half of Hampshire is covered by two national parks, the New Forest and the South Downs. We’d like to point out that park trips can also be combined with books. And boats. Where did we put Persuasion?
