The north-eastern French region is a quick sail from Blighty – the chalk white cliffs of Dover can be seen here from Calais on a clear day – and as one of France’s most populous areas, Nord-Pas-de-Calais will nord see you or the family stuck for inspiration wherever you end up.
As Nord-Pas-de-Calais also has the D-Day landing beaches in Dunkirk and was the setting for many bloody battles in the First and Second World Wars, it’s a leading destination for remembrance too: over 165 military cemeteries commemorating the war fatalities of all nationalities are in the region on the Chemins de mémoire/Remembrance Trails.
