We do not think we are being even slightly shallow by squeeing at the fact that the biggest shoe collection in the world (in the world, people!) is in Northamptonshire’s county town.
Thousands of shoes from Egyptian times onwards have a grip on the ground floor of Northampton’s Northampton Museum and Art Gallery, an establishment inexplicably omitted in our mad museums blog, but which will be visited forthwith from our next Northamptonshire campsite.
And if you're driven by fast car spectating rather than shoes? Northamptonshire camping can also include a race to the circuit of Silverstone near Towcester, the speedy home of the British Grand Prix, the British motorcycle Grand Prix and the Silverstone Classic – visitors can zip their own cars around the track on an experience day here too, although we’re not 100% sure this applies to cars towing caravans (we think it certainly should).
If the historic is more your bag on hol, Northamptonshire has a host of old buildings to keep you occupied, including Diana’s former pad at Althorpe; Kirby Hall, built by one of Liz the First’s ‘comely young men’; William the Conqueror’s Rockingham Castle (with forest), and the quite peculiar folly of the Rushton Triangular Lodge.
