If you’re going a-holidaying in Exeter, we think it’s a fairly safe bet to assume you’re a bit of a historyhead. Devon’s capital is one of Britain’s oldest cities, had Romans pitching up (and washing their feet) there, has the oldest public open space in England and comes with a cathedral and castle dating back to Norman times. Even the cable ferry across the River Exe is nicely olden – and you get to sit back and watch someone else do all the work.
Sadly it’s not possible these days to set up camp in the cathedral or the Roman bathhouse, but there are other options for campsites in Exeter and around – and plenty of other things to do if history leaves you cold (tsk): the Tarka Trail, Haldon Forest Park and the Jurassic Coast are all close to hand, with more info and inspiration on local things to see and do in the ‘Local Attractions’ section of our campsite listings.
