Oh our giddy aunt. Of all the things to do in Matlock, deep in the Derbyshire Dales, edging along Giddy Ledge would be near our top. Never ’eard of Giddy Ledge? It’s a narrow little walkway on the sheer face of limestone crag High Tor high above the River Derwent; we would of course – eventually – look up from our clenched toes to scope out the Peak District landscape laid out below. (Or, possibly, swing into a cable car from High Tor’s base to the caves and caverns of the Heights of Abraham park instead.)
Back at wobbly-legged base, less hair-raising but equally tiptop adventures abound for those camping in Matlock: like its neighbours Bakewell, Buxton and Ashbourne, it’s been a popular tourist destination for centuries. Take a heritage railway trip from Matlock to Rowsley South stations to see the sights from a more comfortable stance, or amble around town and among the flowers of award-winning Hall Leys Park. And as the town is in the Peak District, any Matlock campsite should have quick access to a heady number of other activities: browse for what you’d like to do off site using the Pitchup.com filters.
