Ever so fittingly for water devotees who like nothing more than messing around in boats, Kenneth Grahame started The Wind in the Willows in a Falmouth hotel. He might have got inspiration for the watery exploits of Ratty, Mole, Toad, Otter et al around Falmouth’s harbour, the third biggest natural harbour in the world, or possibly around the Falmouth Docks, or (we think likely) from a boat trip along the scenic sereneness of the River Fal? (We’re not sure where the inspiration for Toad’s motor car rampage came from, but never mind. Also, Toad rocks.)
Whichever it was, it’s ever so fitting to take to the waters if staying in Falmouth – so fitting, in fact, that we sternly say it’s a must. (As is reading The Wind in the Willows.) Either river or sea must be gently bobbed upon every day of a Falmouth camping holiday, even if it’s just a placid paddle in the shallows of one of Falmouth’s five beaches. Get more tips, inspiration, must-sees and other local bits and bobs on each of our Falmouth campsite listings below, which can be filtered by type of accommodation, price and a whole heap more on the left.
