We know that taking a campervan around Ireland is a good idea for a holiday, but that’s normally when you’ve looked at a few maps, read a few guidebooks and have a general idea where you’re going. Not so for Brighton couple Tyler and Amy Slade, who are letting everyone else decide for them.
It’s all part of a major campaign by Tourism Ireland to tap into the market for British visitors to Ireland – currently around half of all tourism to the country is by visitors from the UK. The Ireland Mystery Tour is led by Baaarry the Sheep, who gives the couple two cryptic clues each day about where they’re going to next – Tyler and Amy then throw themselves on the mercy of Facebook and Twitter users to solve the clue and get to the next destination.
People can also send suggestions for the couple through Tourism Ireland’s Facebook and Twitter feeds, from hiking in the Mourne Mountains to helping a farmer in Kilkenny milk his cows. For every clue solved and every activity completed, Tyler and Amy win points – the final tally decides their final destination in Ireland, from budget to luxury.
Tyler and Amy arrived in Belfast on Monday to get the keys to their campervan, a map and their first clue, starting off in Co Antrim by climbing Slemish. You can keep an eye on their adventures and suggest destinations for them at their journey blog, where you can also enter to win a five day break in Ireland for two people. Baaarry would say that’s a woolly good idea.
